Our School
We are housed in a Victorian building with later additions. The school was founded in 1876, catering for 75 children between the ages of 5 and 11.
The first Headteacher to be appointed was Alfred Kirk from London who set up the school in October 1876. Mr .Kirk had his first inspection in June 1878 by an H.M.I. He was subsequently promoted when noted in his opening sentence
“I have seldom seen better work anywhere. All through the school from the infants to the highest class the teaching has been thoroughly successful, the tone and discipline are very good….”
In September 1903 control of the Culmstock Primary school passed to Devon County Council
Mr. Roland A Bull took charge of the school from April 1917. During his time as head he saw the school through the First and Second World War the installation of drinking water from the well, the playground being laid to tarmacadam and in Easter 1935 the installation of electricity.
In 1965 a long awaited improvement was completed to the school playing field, the village community was granted permission for playground equipment to be erected and the field to be used by the community when not required by the school
The current building now includes a self contained Foundation Stage Unit which was built on the school grounds in 1965, the rest of the school is housed in the Victorian building adapted to meet the changing needs of the learner today.
Our two playgrounds are well equipped and we have a very large field for sports and environmental studies, we utilise all these areas to provide an exciting learning environment.
At Culmstock School we do everything we can to provide a safe, happy, caring and well ordered environment in which learning can take place. We want each child to feel valued as an individual and as part of the community of the school.
Teaching and learning is our school's purpose. We seek to establish a positive and challenging environment in which to do it
